@luxmeatok: We need to talk about the false claims that white nationalism is making to indigeneity. See my earlier video on how racism is using the language of decoloniality here: @Dr Marchella Ward (“Chella”) #decolonize #decolonial #decolonization #migration #antiracism

With respect, I can tell your studies aren’t in settler colonial theory or crit indigenous theory… Indigeneity cannot (should not!) be reduced to just a reaction/response to the settler colonial paradigm. Maybe thru a simple western comparative political theory this works, but critical indigenous theory offers a much more expansive, less dismissive understanding of indigeneity existing in SEVERAL paradigms, which yes includes the settler colonial paradigm, but to say indigeneity is defined solely by being colonized is to strip natives of our survivance. what defines indigeneity is relationship to land, our transmotion, our stories, our embodied grounded normativity. Read the work of audre simpson, leanne betasamosake simpson, gerald vizenor, or patrick wolfe on this stuff (also glen coulthard). The frameworks they offer of indigeneity honor the layers of native sovereignty and resilience, instead of reducing the boundaries/definitions of our identities to mere stories of victimry and erasure. Your narrow and reactive definition of “indigenous” also doesn’t fully contend w the settler-produced racial context you’re talking about: There are plenty of natives throughout even just Turtle Island who are/would be racialized as white and sometimes even have majority white ancestry. This alone demonstrates what I’m getting at- what it means to be indigenous cannot be adequately defined/understood through one western-centered, racialized settler framework!

Here’s a quote from Zuckmayer about the Rhine region where I now live. He calls it “Europe’s great mill of peoples”: “Well, what do you know about your great-great-grandmother’s affairs? She certainly didn’t demand proof of Aryan descent.” “… just imagine what might have happened in an old family. From the Rhine—of all places. From the Rhine. From the great mill of peoples. From the winepress of Europe!” “And now just imagine your line of ancestors—going back to the birth of Christ. There was a Roman field captain, a dark-skinned fellow, brown as a ripe olive, who taught a blonde girl Latin. And then a Jewish spice merchant joined the family—a serious man who converted to Christianity before the wedding and established the Catholic family tradition. – And then a Greek doctor joined the family, or a Celtic legionnaire, a Graubünden mercenary, a Swedish cavalryman, one of Napoleon’s soldiers, a deserter Cossack, a Black Forest miner, a wandering miller’s apprentice from Alsace, a portly sailor from Holland, a Magyar, a Pandur, an officer from Vienna, a French actor, a Bohemian musician —they all lived, fought, drank, sang, and had children on the Rhine” (from *The Devil’s General*). That is reality expressed in literary terms. To this day, and even before that.

Question: the welsh were colonized and then went on to colonize. So were they considered indigenous up until the point that they became colonizers themselves?

Yes the gene that makes us white is a relatively recent mutation in evolutionary terms, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t indigenous to somewhere. The mutation originated in Europe so white people are indigenous to Europe. Yes the first humans in Europe were dark skinned but we evolved from them, we didn’t colonize them like we did the rest of the world.

I’m confused so if someone ancestry was native to Europe he’s still not considered indigenous because his people were never colonised?

I understand this overall but also feel a little confused by it, because there *are* ~white~ European cultures that have only been colonized and not themselves colonizers, and I don't really see why they could not be defined as indigenous unless you add more context... at the end there, you have this part about Irish people specifically and how they are now racialized as white, so then is the 'added context' that to be indigenous one cannot also benefit from colonialism and white supremacy, ex. an Irish person can now enjoy privileges in places colonized by white people (like the USA) per white supremacist ideology, and thus they can't be 'indigenous'?

Irish people didn’t stop being indigenous when we became white though. Having been colonised remains a huge part of our national identity. Definitely not the only way to be Irish, but some of us are.
