A city at the southern tip of Mexico has become the place where the Trump administration sends migrants from across the Western Hemisphere, Kevin Sieff reports. Deportees tell him it’s where dreams go to die. Tapachula, Mexico, now serves as “a mass waiting area for those rebuffed by U.S. immigration policy, out of sight of lawyers and human-rights defenders,” Sieff writes. “This is now where the largest concentration of deportees is dropped in Mexico, and where most migrants traveling through Latin America en route to the U.S. are halted.” The Trump administration, unable or unwilling to send deportees to their home country, has bused them 2,000 miles, from the U.S. border to a small city where they don’t have legal status, Sieff continues. “It’s a practice that started last year without any announcement and has quietly grown since then.” “The mix of nationalities has prompted officials at the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration to begin informally referring to the city as TapaYork—a kind of reverse Ellis Island,” Sief continues. “There are roughly 350,000 permanent residents of Tapachula and approximately 60,000 migrants living here.” “Donald Trump can claim that the border is ‘closed’ because it has effectively been relocated to Tapachula,” Sieff writes. “The city looks and feels the way towns in northern Mexico along the U.S. border once did—a dumping ground for those expelled from the United States and a gathering place for those snagged on their way north.” 📸: Lisette Poole
