@dr.katie.h: “Serious but stable” It’s one of those phrases we hear on the news all the time… but what does it actually mean? One of the biggest misconceptions is that “stable” means someone is okay. It doesn’t. Someone can be incredibly unwell and still be stable. Hopefully this gives you a little glimpse behind the doors of an Emergency Department, and some context the next time you hear these words on the news. *These are broad descriptions only and terminology can vary between health services and jurisdictions #drkatie #emergencymedicine #emergencydoctor
I’ve always wondered what this means! Thank you 🙏🏼

Does unresponsive mean they don’t have a heart beat or that they can’t be woken?

Question: someone needs cpr does that mean breathing has stopped or the heart has stopped? Can you give more insight to “unresponsive” and when cpr should be used?

I think this needs to be explained more OR doctors need to start thinking about their language to loved ones. I spoke to a consultant at 6pm on a Friday night on telephone and he referred to my mum as ‘Clinically Stable’. To the uneducated non medical me that meant she was doing fine. My Mum had a bleed in the lung at that point and was placed in a coma hours later and I never spoke to her again and I replay this phone call daily xx
