I really like your insights on this, I believe it also has a lot to do with how you were raised and the parental examples you were given. That's why you're always supposed to search for someone who has the same values and wants the same things from life. Having children with someone will give you a common cause with someone but eventually children grow up and there has to be something more to keep people together. One of the best songs ever written about the subject was Fleetwood Mac's Landslide.

Maybe it depends on the individual relationships. If attached, jealousy seems likely, but if just a fling, maybe not so much. Insecurities are another factor to consider.
