My Dad came out at 50. It was only 1997 and while I didn’t care and loved him anyway, I worried about how others would feel. Finding out Ian McKellan was gay too actually made it easier. He’s still with us and has been lucky enough to have over 30 years with the love of his life. ❤️

I’m certain his father knew. If it was a concern, he would have most likely questioned Ian about it. But he didn’t, like his sister, because he loved him regardless.

The military threw me out when I was 22 forcing me to tell my mom, her acceptance changed my whole life, after that 3 am call from Germany I never lied about it again, so grateful I didn't have to waste time not being my authentic self.
