The Eurasian teal (Anas crecca), also known as the common teal, is Europe’s smallest dabbling duck species. Known for its remarkable flight agility and distinct breeding plumage, it is widely distributed across Eurasia. Eurasian Teal Overview The Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) is a small, highly agile dabbling duck native to Eurasia. Key Characteristics: • Physical Attributes: Measures 34–38 cm in length with a wingspan of 53–59 cm. Males in breeding plumage feature a rich chestnut head with an iridescent green eye patch bordered by fine cream lines, gray flanks, and a bright yellow patch under the tail. Females display a mottled brown camouflage. Both sexes show a bright metallic green wing patch (speculum) visible in flight. • Habitat & Distribution: Breeds across northern Eurasia and migrates to temperate and subtropical regions (including Europe, South Asia, and North Africa) during winter. Inhabits shallow freshwater wetlands, bogs, lakes, and estuaries. • Diet & Foraging: Operates as an omnivorous dabbling duck, feeding on seeds, aquatic plants, insects, mollusks, and crustaceans in shallow water. • Behavior: Highly gregarious outside of the breeding season, forming fast-flying, coordinated flocks capable of taking off almost vertically from the water surface. Name Origin: The bird's distinctive blue-green wing pattern gives its name to the color "teal." Vocalizations: Males produce a clear, high-pitched whistle (krik), while females have a softer, low quack. Conservation: Classified as Least Concern due to large global populations, though wetland habitat loss remains a localized threat. - @birdsofsound
