It is genuinely disturbing how quickly some people abandon their supposed principles the moment compassion is extended to the “wrong” people. 🙁 Some of you claim to stand for humanity, justice and Palestinian liberation, but the moment someone acknowledges that innocent Israelis were murdered on October 7, suddenly they’re a traitor? A Zionist? An enemy of the Palestinian cause? Be so serious. 🫩✌️ Mamdani has consistently advocated for Palestinians, condemned the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza and publicly called Netanyahu a war criminal. He’s used his platform to draw attention to Palestinian suffering. Yet attending a vigil organised by anti-occupation Israelis for peace is apparently where some people draw the line. These people have lost family members too. Why should mourning them be controversial? Let’s be clear. Condemning Hamas for murdering civilians does NOT mean supporting the Israeli government. Supporting Palestinian liberation does NOT require you to celebrate Israeli deaths. Condemning Netanyahu does NOT mean you hate Jewish people. This is basic humanity 101. Hamas can be wrong for murdering innocent civilians. The Israeli government can be wrong for its treatment of Palestinians and the devastation inflicted on Gaza. Palestinians deserve freedom, dignity and safety. Israeli civilians deserve safety too. One truth does not cancel out the other. Mamdani is the mayor of New York City. His responsibility is to the people of New York, including Palestinians, Muslims, Jews, Israelis and everyone else who calls that city home. He is not the mayor of Israel or Palestine. He should be able to stand with grieving New Yorkers without being accused of betraying an entire people. And to those who insist that acknowledging Israeli suffering makes someone a Zionist, can you not distinguish between an Israeli civilian and the Israeli government? Between Jewish people and the actions of the Israeli state? Between mourning someone’s death and endorsing their country’s politics? If you believe every Israeli is collectively responsible for their government’s actions, how is that different from blaming Palestinians collectively for Hamas? You cannot condemn collective punishment in one breath and apply collective guilt in the next. I am pro-Palestinian because Palestinians deserve freedom, dignity, safety and self-determination. None of that requires me to stop caring about innocent Israelis. Compassion is not a limited resource. Caring about one group does not diminish your concern for another. You should be able to mourn one group without being accused of betraying the other. You should be able to condemn a government without hating an entire people. And you should be able to oppose an armed group’s violence without abandoning the rights of the people it claims to represent. If your humanity disappears the moment someone expresses compassion for people you consider the enemy, maybe it’s time to reconsider what you mean when you claim to stand for humanity. This is NOT rocket science. You can oppose occupation, condemn attacks on civilians and demand accountability while believing that every human life has value. That is not betrayal.
