I like a LOT of almond milk creamer in my coffee. At this point, you could reasonably argue that I’m making a warm cup of creamer with a splash of coffee. Ok, slight exaggeration… And you know what? I like it that way. It’s such a small, ridiculous example of something I’ve been thinking about much more deeply lately: How often do we apologize for our preferences before anyone has even asked us to? How often do we minimize what we need, explain our boundaries, override what our bodies are telling us, or make ourselves uncomfortable because it feels easier than risking someone else’s discomfort? For those of us who are deeply empathic, it can be incredibly easy to understand everyone else. Their needs make sense. Their feelings make sense. Their disappointment makes sense. But where are you in all of that empathy? That’s something I talked about with psychiatrist, bestselling author, and empathy expert Dr. Judith Orloff @Judith Orloff MD on this week’s episode of Your Yes Filled Life. One of the things our conversation brought home for me is this: Empathy without self-empathy can become self-abandonment. You can care deeply about someone and still say no. You can understand their disappointment without changing your decision. You can feel what someone else is feeling without making it yours to carry. And you can make your coffee with an absolutely unreasonable amount of almond milk creamer without defending yourself to the coffee police. 😂 The stakes aren’t always coffee. But practicing the small ways we honor ourselves matters when the bigger moments come. 🎙️ Listen to The Empathy You’re Forgetting to Give Yourself with Dr. Judith Orloff on Your Yes Filled Life - find it on all major platforms or find your preferred platform with the link at the top of my page. And make your coffee however you like it. How DO you take your coffee? #empath #youryesfilledlife #coffee #highlysensitiveperson #selftrust
