This has been what I’ve been doing for the past four days, mask-strapped tightly to my face, fettling pot after pot, refining their surfaces, smoothing them, as this means the finished pieces will themselves be neater and more uniform. How long or involved this step is really depends on the glaze type you’re using, I often regret the route I’ve taken with these thick, feldspathic glazes, as their consistency in the bucket is like double-cream and them don’t necessarily settle onto the pots themselves in a neat layer, whereas some thinner glazes, with different compositions, settle in a far more consistent veneer. For some reason, I never choose the ‘easy’ way of doing things. Regardless, here’s how I tackle these angular bowl forms with their deep feet. The foot adds plenty of time to this process as it has to be perfect, both inside and out, otherwise a wavering, messy line can form on the bottom, which goes against the sleek and highly finished aesthetic I strive for.
