@onthisdayrewound: On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the American Revolutionary War and recognizing the United States as an independent nation. To capture this historic moment, American-born artist Benjamin West set out to paint a scene of the negotiation table in London. His plan was to feature both delegation groups side-by-side. On the left, he painted the American commissioners: John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Franklin’s grandson Temple Franklin, and Henry Laurens. However, the right side of the canvas remains completely blank. The British delegation, led by David Hartley, felt deeply humiliated by Britain's defeat and the loss of the Thirteen Colonies. Upset by the terms of the treaty, they flatly refused to pose for West. Because the British delegates would not sit for their portraits, West could never complete the visual narrative. Today, held at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, the unfinished canvas stands as a striking symbol of American independence and British reluctance. #educational #EduTok #historia #History #education
