@mumsbalance: It is absolutely our role to keep our children safe from danger. But as they get older that oversight weakens, they will travel by themselves to school perhaps, have friends we don’t know of, a mobile phone and eventually maybe social media. They need to be equipped with the skills to navigate themselves safely when we are not there. How can we build this resilience in the next generation?
This is especially the case for male kids in the South Asian communities.

From what age did you start doing this with your kids. Mine is turning 3 soon but when I give him options he doesn’t understand most of the time. And sometimes he would pick the last option because it’s the one he heard last lol

I completely agree. But there are occasions where we must make decisions for them—when we do, it’s important that we explain why we are making those decisions so that: (1) They don’t feel that it’s coming from a place of control. (2) We make them feel like we respect them and their intelligence enough to understand the explanation. (3) It will help develop their own reasoning when they see us verbalise our reasoning.

agree with this its such an important skill to have. You are able to make decisions and learn from choices. there are some parents who make informed decision because they come from experience etc. They want you to follow. Unless you ask for their advice and support this is something else.
