Histamine is the thing most of us only ever meet through allergies. It is also a messenger the brain uses, and the new work is about exactly that side of it. 🌿 A study in Nature Mental Health mapped where histamine-related genes are switched on inside the brain. Not what histamine does to your nose. Where in the head the system is active at all. They found it switched on in the regions tied to these ordinary things: 1. Holding an emotion steady instead of being carried off by it 2. Anxiety 3. Sleep 4. Acting before you have finished deciding 5. Thinking something through 6. Reward, meaning what feels worth doing at all 7. Attention, meaning what you can keep looking at Those regions overlapped with the ones where researchers had already found structural differences in brains with ADHD. 🌾 Now the careful part, because this travels badly. It does not mean histamine causes ADHD. Overlap is not cause. Two things can sit in the same place for reasons that have nothing to do with each other. It means two maps, drawn for completely different reasons, landed on some of the same ground. That is a reason to keep looking, not a conclusion. What it does correct is an old shorthand. For years ADHD was explained through dopamine, the chemical tied to wanting something and following through on it. One chemical, one explanation, tidy. Brains are not tidy. 🕊 I like this study for a reason that has little to do with attention. It is a reminder that the simple version of any explanation is usually just the part that was found first. ☁ ... 🌙 If a description of you has only ever carried one cause inside it, hold that loosely. It is probably not wrong. It is probably not finished either.
