Your big wheels need to be moved forward a bit so they are a little closer to the front castors. (You can also ask for an anti tip stabiliser if your chair doesn’t have one.) The wheels being further forward makes it easier to tip, when you lean backwards. You also won’t have to lean back as much. But it does run the risk of the chair tipping backwards if you just lean back when you’re stationary in it. That’s why the anti tip stabiliser would be usual for you until you get the balance right. Honestly most of it just comes with practice and as your confidence with the chair grows so will what you’re able to do in it. It’s also easier to get up the kerb without stopping the chair before you tip it backwards. But that’s what comes with time and practice. Ideally, you need a wheelchair user to show/teach you how to use the chair effectively. Let me know if I can help in any way. I’ve been using a wheelchair for over 37 years now, which is odd as I’m only 21 😜

for wheelies, dont start with your arms that far back, hands forward on wheel like @ 2- 2:30 o'clock position, go backwards quickly to @ 12 o'clock position & then quickly push forward to @ 1-2 o'clock & try to balance, my father broke his leg & hip in a motorcycle accident when I was a kid & I sat & played with his wheelchair & mastered wheeling in a few hrs & 40yrs later I can still do it to this day & actually spin & wheel to anywhere on 2 wheels in one. OH & dont lean forward, just keep your back straight against the chair & trust yourself & your balance, start slow with your quick jerk going forward, eventually you will find the sweet spot & you'll be able to nail it everytime! You got this! 🥰

So… it’s really hard on a non-custom chair because a custom one will be balanced for much easier turning and wheelies… if you want that.

I find it easier to imagine bringing my thighs and body together rather than trying to leaning / tipping backwards. It will give you more control down the road! So the sharp propel forward you are already doing whilst using your core to bring your legs and upper body together. The angle between your lap and body should decrease instead of staying the same but further leant back if that makes sense?

Lean forward; if you lean backward you'll lose your balance

The fear of falling backwards is the hardest part. When my brother first got his wheelchair he put in a helmet and elbow pads while he practiced. Now he can hold a wheelie indefinitely. I’m honestly impressed with how fast you’re learning without them.

Your axel is too far back, the chair needs to be adjusted to be more active set up

your wheel base is quite far back- if able to move the axle forward wheelies will be easier as with them that far back you’ll really struggle to get any lift :)

Your wheels need to be further forwards. They often get put back further because electric wheels can tip you back but as long as you keep the anti tips on you’ll be fine

I figured it out by kind of doing a crunch? I start with my hands at 11-12 and crunch my abdomen in to pop my front wheels up while pushing my hands forward! You’ll get there!!
