I understand why you noticed that, but it’s actually because Cameroon is very different linguistically. 🇨🇲 We have so many ethnic groups and indigenous languages that even people living in the same city may come from completely different backgrounds. So there isn’t always one local language that everyone can speak, like Igbo in many parts of Southeast Nigeria or Yoruba in much of the Southwest. In Cameroon, people often switch to a common language when communicating with others, especially French, English or Pidgin. You’re more likely to hear the indigenous languages when you’re around families, villages or people from the same ethnic community. So if you visited mainly cities in both the French- and English-speaking regions, you could easily hear mostly French, English and Pidgin without realizing how many native languages are spoken here. ❤️🇨🇲

it's because the population of the indigenous people of the cities are few. so the cities are generally multicultural

Nigeria has 3 national languages. Meanwhile in Cameroon we don’t have national languages. If u see any Cameroonians speaking in their native language just know they are from the same village

you are right. we are mixed with all the other cultural groups. so to avoid people feeling uncomfortable around you, we speak french/English and our local languages only when in close family gatherings.

It’s definitely spoken in the public but it’ll depend on who is in front of you. Is the person from the same tribe of yourself? Not necessarily. We alternate among those languages be it French, English, Camafranglais, pidgin and whatever other tribal language we speak.
