Does a large church, with lots of people and a lively atmosphere, automatically mean that God is present? Not necessarily. What really matters is whether that church is leading people to know God and do His will. Here are four signs every Christian should be watchful about. First, talking more about giving than about truth. There is nothing wrong with giving itself. But if a church constantly emphasises: “The more you give, the more you will be blessed,” and uses giving to measure a Christian, then we need to be watchful. True giving should come from a willing heart and love for God. It should not be used as a way to exchange money for God’s blessing. Second, there are gatherings, but no genuine love. True love for one another is not just exchanging a few greetings when you meet. It means that when someone is spiritually weak or going through difficulties, there are people who support them with the truth and help bring them back to God. Third, people are lifted up more than God. If what you hear most often in gatherings is: how powerful a certain pastor is, how successful someone is, or how extraordinary someone’s experiences are, but there is very little teaching that truly leads people to know God, understand the Bible, and obey the truth, then you need to be careful. The Lord said: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” John 8:31 KJV. A truly healthy church does not cause people to admire human beings more and more. It causes them to look to God more and more. Fourth, there is very little warning about repentance, watchfulness, and preparing for the Lord’s return. If a church only talks about: blessing, success, grace, and breakthrough, but rarely talks about: repentance, holiness, watchfulness, and preparing to meet the Lord, then that is also something we need to discern carefully. The church is not only meant to help people live a better life in this world. It should also help people prepare their lives to welcome the Lord. So, when discerning a church, do not only look at how many people attend, how good the atmosphere feels, or how famous the pastor is. What truly matters is: Is the Holy Spirit working there? Is Christ being exalted? Are people being led to obey God’s Word?
