How Did This Engine Survive? • In this video, we work on a second-generation Renault Trafic equipped with the 1.9 dCi F9Q diesel engine. • The vehicle arrived with one of the most unusual failures I have seen in a long time. • During inspection, it became clear that both mounting brackets for the high-pressure fuel pump had completely broken off. • The front bracket is integrated into the engine mount support and also serves as a mounting point for the fuel pump. The second support bracket is located on the rear side of the pump. In this case, both mounting points were completely destroyed. • What makes this repair even more surprising is that the owner managed to drive the vehicle to the workshop. • To keep the fuel pump from moving, improvised repairs had been made using wooden wedges placed around the pump from different directions. The entire assembly was additionally secured with wire. • As unusual as it sounds, the vehicle was still being driven in this condition. • The major problem is that the fuel pump is driven by the timing belt. Any movement of the pump can damage the belt, alter valve timing, or even cause complete timing belt failure. • Potential consequences include: ⚠️ valve damage ⚠️ piston damage ⚠️ major engine repairs • Fortunately, serious engine damage was avoided in this case. • In this video, we perform a complete teardown, inspection, and diagnosis of the damage. We inspect the fuel pump mounting system, timing belt components, pulleys, and related hardware. We also evaluate the consequences of operating the vehicle with a fuel pump that was barely secured. • The inspection reveals that some components have already suffered damage from contact with the timing belt.
