Drakes. Drakes are the reason why. They would blast the eagles out of the sky or tear them to shreds with their teeth and claws. The only option is to sneak in, which is what they did and it wouldn't have worked any other way

The ring would have also corrupted the eagles. They aren’t cars, they are living beings that the ring would also attempt to corrupt and use to return to Sauron.

I always love the various reasons the extended non cannon lore gives for why. Like if this is the game I’m thinking of, the Orcs also have access to essentially anti aircraft weapons to launch explosives into the sky
