Many people reduce his character to “he dies and comes back,” but Return by Death is only one part of what makes his story so interesting. Subaru starts the story believing that being transported to another world means he is destined to become a powerful hero. Instead, he quickly discovers that he has almost no physical power compared to the people and monsters around him. His only major advantage is Return by Death, which sends him back to a previous checkpoint after his death while allowing him to remember what happened. However, Return by Death is not simply a convenient ability. Subaru cannot freely choose when he returns, he cannot normally explain the ability to others, and everyone else forgets the events that happened after the checkpoint. This means Subaru is forced to carry the memories of his failures completely alone. He can spend an entire loop building relationships, fighting for someone, or trying to prevent a tragedy, only for everything to disappear when he dies. This is why Subaru’s greatest strength is not actually Return by Death itself. His greatest strength is his ability to continue despite knowing how terrifying failure can be. Subaru is also intentionally written as a flawed protagonist. He can be arrogant, emotionally unstable, selfish, and impulsive. He makes serious mistakes, especially when he becomes too obsessed with protecting the people he cares about. But Re doesn't pretend those mistakes never happened. Subaru is forced to confront them and grow from them. His relationship with Emilia is one of the biggest parts of this development. Subaru initially places Emilia on a pedestal and wants to become the person who saves her. Over time, he learns that caring about someone does not mean deciding everything for them. Emilia has her own goals, fears, choices, and identity. Julius is also important to Subaru's development. Their relationship begins with conflict and resentment, but eventually becomes one based on mutual respect. Julius trusting Subaru is significant because Subaru gradually realizes that he doesn't need to prove his worth by doing everything alone. This is one of the central ideas behind Re:Zero: Subaru doesn't become a great character because he suddenly becomes the strongest person in the room. He becomes stronger because he learns to accept his weaknesses, rely on others, understand the people around him, and keep moving forward after failure. Rezero is ultimately a story about a flawed person learning that failure doesn't make him worthless. And perhaps the most important thing Subaru eventually learns is that he doesn't always have to be the one saving everyone. Sometimes, he needs to let other people save him too.
