(August 2024 strict national framework under the statutory guidance working together to improve school attendance) The Hard Reality: * Late = Unauthorised: Arriving 20+ minutes late registers as Code U (an unauthorised absence). * Fines Triggered: 10 unauthorised sessions in 10 weeks automatically triggers a fine or legal action. For families dealing with Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), this turned mornings into a nightmare. Parents are being fined and prosecuted every day because mental health isn’t taken seriously—and strict fines don’t heal anxious children. I was lucky. I filmed each and every meltdown. Yes I videod my distressed child on the playground outside the school to prove to a judge that I was doing everything I could to ensure ‘regular attendance’ I was petrified I’d be prosecuted as the school were threatening me so I paid for a private psychologists to prove my son was too unwell to attend. Most families can’t do this. I spent months battling him and the system, completely unaware that another way to happiness existed. With home education up 22% this year alone, it’s clear families are being pushed out. I feel full of guilt and regret watching how I treated my child who was having a breakdown and trying to commute to me that he’s in danger. IM forever sad and sorry this occurred and now I understand him very differently. His last day at school April 2025 and he’s never looked back. School fines don’t help anyone.
