postpartum check ins shouldn’t just be about the baby. because yes, the baby needs to be checked on. of course they do. we want to know if they’re eating enough, sleeping enough, gaining weight, having enough wet diapers, and hitting all the milestones they’re supposed to be hitting. we track everything. we remember every little detail. we notice every tiny change. but somewhere in the middle of making sure the baby is okay, moms can forget to ask themselves the same questions. how am i actually doing? how have i been feeling lately? am i sleeping when i get the chance? have i been eating enough? have i felt like myself? have i had moments where everything feels completely overwhelming? have i actually had a chance to process everything that happened? because becoming a mom is a huge change. your entire life can feel different overnight. your schedule changes. your body changes. your relationships can change. your priorities change. your sleep changes. even the way you think can feel different. and somehow there can be this pressure to just be happy because you have a baby now. but postpartum isn’t always just the sweet newborn cuddles and tiny outfits. sometimes it’s crying because you’re exhausted. sometimes it’s feeling like you don’t recognize yourself. sometimes it’s being overwhelmed by how much responsibility you suddenly have. sometimes it’s feeling guilty for needing a break. sometimes it’s loving your baby more than anything while also desperately needing someone to take care of you for a little while. and none of those feelings automatically make you a bad mom. they make you a mom who is going through a massive life change. i think moms deserve check ins too. not just “how’s the baby?” but “how are you?” and actually meaning it. because the person taking care of the baby deserves care too. i’ve been trying to remind myself that checking in with myself doesn’t mean i’m taking attention away from my baby. it means i’m making sure the person caring for my baby is okay too. sometimes even just taking a minute to recognize how i’m feeling can make me feel a little more grounded. i don’t have to pretend everything is perfect. i don’t have to ignore a hard day. i don’t have to push every uncomfortable feeling away. i can just acknowledge it. today was hard. today i felt overwhelmed. today i felt happy. today i felt exhausted. today i felt like myself. today i didn’t. all of those things are worth noticing. because postpartum is a whole experience, and moms deserve to be part of the conversation too. so if you’re a new mom, this is your reminder to check in with yourself today. not just your baby. you matter too. your feelings matter. your mental health matters. your physical health matters. and needing support doesn’t mean you’re doing motherhood wrong. it means you’re human. 🤍 #mom #newmom #momlife #postpartum #momtok
