What they carried & how they marched: • Each legionary bore his own sarcina(marching pack) rather than relying entirely on the baggage train. • Their load typically included a pole called a furca from which the pack hung—a loculus(satchel), cloak/bedroll, mess kit, and water skins. • The standard pack weight for a Roman in this period is estimated at up to ~60 lbs / ~27 kg. • Contrary to some modern expectations, they did not march en masse on horseback. While cavalry units existed, the core legionary infantry advanced on foot. • In a campaign such as in Gaul (57 BC) under Julius Caesar, the terrain and roads often meant the column moved at a moderate pace—around 20–25 km per day on good terrain. Uniforms & equipment overview: • The legionaries wore red tunics beneath chainmail or scale armor (lorica hamata or lorica squamata). On their left arm swung a large rectangular shield (scutum) with metal fittings; the right hand held their pilum or gladius when deployed.
