Story behind previous Iranian flag. The lion, sun, and sword on Iran’s old flag was rooted in Shiʿa Islam — not just monarchy. 🦁 The lion represents Imam ʿAli, Asadullah (Lion of God). ⚔️ The sword is Dhu’l-Fiqar, his sword — justice with moral authority. ☀️ The sun symbolised divine light (nūr) and righteous order. Together, the emblem expressed Shiʿa ideals of justice, courage, and moral rule, later absorbed into state symbolism. It was removed after 1979 because it became linked to monarchy — not because it was un-Islamic. History gets simplified. Symbols shouldn’t.
