Johnny wants Carmine, a boss, whacked. There is president for this, a big one was Paul Castellano. From what I hear Castellano became the boss of the Gambino crime family, and due to old beefs and a completely opposite business philosophy to one John Gotti made him a target for removal. Here’s the thing, Gottis’ move might not have been widely accepted if Castellano was not also becoming increasingly disliked by his men. They felt he was becoming increasingly disrespectful of them and to his wife also as he was clearly having a live in affair with one of his female employees while living in the same home with both of them. So Gotti who had widespread support set a trap with mafia soldier Sammy “the Bull” Gravano and had gunmen waiting at a restaurant for Castellano to arrive. The hit went down and Castellano was rubbed out. Gotti would ascend to be the Boss of the Gambinos. I think the key to understand how he did it is to know that Castellanos men were losing confidence in him. Gotti saw that they could accept losing the boss if they got a better one. So when John indicates that he wants Carmine whacked he should be asking himself what Carmines’ men would do, how much do they like Carmine? He might be in a Gotti position where he can rally support. Or maybe he just wants Tony to make the hit and take the blame. It’s a tangled web.
