Those systems are designed to read different document type and in case they cant parse some document, the IT or vendor fix that. We had issue where the Google Link CV was not processing and talk to the vendor and they added a feature that helped read those as well

Nope. ATS can read binary (pdf) just as well as xml text (docx). You'd just end up with scrambled formatting with docx, and the fact that it will open another MS word instead of a just browser tab. You'd just annoy the shii out of them.
