You can achieve a high degree of self-sufficiency on a surprisingly small amount of land. Managing land is a lot of work, particularly if you’re working and/or have children. We live on 2.5 acres, but we actually produce food on less than 1 acre of it. This enables us to grow roughly 60% of our own food alongside our full time jobs. We dedicate all our spare time to managing this land and I don’t think we could take on any more. So, if you’re considering buying land or a smallholding, I’d encourage you to ask yourself the following questions: 🌱 What degree of self-sufficiency are you striving for? Do you want to grow your own fruit & vegetables? Maybe a few eggs and some honey? Are you hoping to produce your own meat? Or are you aiming to grow everything you consume including grains like wheat, oats and barley? 🌱 What is your budget? Land is expensive and your budget will be a huge consideration in deciding how much land you want. 🌱 How much time can you realistically dedicate to your land? Are you going to be working alongside your homesteading pursuits? Are you still going to be attending all the parties? All these questions are interrelated to a degree. All is to say, you don’t have to have acres and acres of land to achieve a high degree of self-sufficiency, nor do you have to strive to do absolutely everything yourself! Growing even a small amount of your own food is hugely satisfying and rewarding! I’m sharing how much space we use for food production and how much we get from it to help you decide what you might need: 🥕 We grow fruit and vegetables on 700 square meters and this gives us enough fruit and vegetables for the year with some to spare to share with friends and family. 🍏🐓 We have an orchard that’s 1200 square meters and our laying hens and chickens live here. We get all our apples, more eggs than we know what to do with and a good amount of chicken from this space. 🐝 Our bees hardly take up any space at all. A couple of hives could be fitted quite easily into any space. 🐖 Our pigs take up about 600 square meters. #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden
