On November 6, 2020, Bennett was fatally shot in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 26, following an altercation outside a hookah lounge. His second studio album, What It Means to Be King, was released in 2022 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, as did his 2023 album Grandson, which would be his final album.
