McKenna West, a cardiac nurse from Alaska, filed an emergency application with the US Supreme Court this week asking the justices to halt a California custody ruling that a Texas court upheld on September 2. Here is how it got here. California couple Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed conceived through IVF and contracted with West to carry the embryo. Around 20 weeks, doctors diagnosed the unborn baby with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare and serious congenital heart defect. The couple cited a contract clause covering fetal abnormalities and asked her to end the pregnancy. She refused. She traveled to Texas, with financial help from the pro-life group Live Action, and gave birth on August 12 in Dallas. She calls him Gabriel. His biological parents call him Rumi. West says she got about 60 seconds with him while the cord was still attached, and has not been allowed to hold him since. He underwent the Norwood procedure, the first of three open-heart surgeries for HLHS, on August 17. He survived it. His condition is still critical. Both sides say they are fighting for him. West says she does not believe the couple will keep pursuing care given they asked for an abortion. Gilkar testified,
