My new scheme: SmoothStart Handwriting 🖋️ 🥰 Since September, I have created, refined and implemented a new handwriting scheme in our school. Instead of getting the children to write the Date and LC at the beginning of English, which felt like a pointless and painful exercise, the children now do 5 minutes of handwriting. We have scrapped our discrete 30 minute handwriting lessons which has freed up precious time in the time table and instead, do handwriting at the beginning of English. This seems like such a minor transition but has had a massive impact 📈. We found that before, children were almost compartmentalising handwriting and only writing neatly in their handwriting book. Whereas now, it is at the top of their English book as a reminder for the rest of their work. It also sets the tone for expectation straight away. Children are also associated sounds taught in handwriting with their spelling in English lessons. All boxes are being connected and seen as one rather than separate components 👏🏼 We start English with gross/fine motor skills warm ups, reinforce grip and sitting expectations, modal the letter/sound/word then the children practise. It is a fantastic calming transition 😃 Check out “SmoothStart Handwriting” on TES where I have uploaded my whole school progression map and edible starters. This has taken a huge amount of work so I am asking for a small contribution for all my time and effort. Hopefully I have saved some of you a mountain of work☺️ https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/smoothstart-handwriting-13415004 #handwriting #fundamental #primaryschool #lifeofateacher #teachertiktok
