Stand By Me turns 40 today, and River Phoenix was originally auditioning for the wrong role. He read for Gordie first, but Rob Reiner kept noticing how much he actually resembled Chris Chambers instead and recast him on the spot. Reiner also locked the four boys in a hotel room for two weeks before filming even started, no rehearsing lines, just games and improv exercises, until they actually became friends off camera. That's why the chemistry never feels performed. The milk money scene almost didn't work either. Phoenix kept doing takes that felt hollow until Reiner pulled him aside and told him to think privately about a time an adult let him down. Never asked what he landed on. The next take is the one in the film, and it's still one of the rawest child performances ever captured. Even the title was a last minute save. It was adapted from Stephen King's novella The Body, tested poorly under that name, and only became Stand By Me after Reiner heard the Ben E. King song at home and built the ending around it. King watched an early screening and reportedly couldn't speak afterward, then told Reiner it was the best adaptation of his work he'd ever seen. Forty years later, still true.
