10 Points from this week’s lesson 1. The main theme of the fourth quarter, The Gift of Prophecy, centres on God’s deliberate decision to keep communicating with humanity after sin severed direct face-to-face communion. Rather than abandoning fallen human beings, God instituted prophetic communication to reveal His character, safeguard His people against uncertainty, offer salvation through Jesus Christ, and restore a broken relationship. 2. In the beginning, God created humanity as beings to communicate with directly in harmony. Direct fellowship was the original blueprint for human-divine, human-human, and human-environmental interaction (Gen. 2: 15-18). What does God’s original design for direct communion reveal about how much He desires to be understood by us today? 3. Humans were not created as robots. They were granted responsibility and freedom to chose good or evil (Gen. 2: 15-17). Sadly, they chose wrongly. Sin entered and altered the relationship between God and His creation, leading to indirect communication. How does God’s indirect communication with us protect us even when we are in a fallen state? 4. When our first parents sinned and hid from God, He took the initiative to restore the broken relationship and begin the process of reconciliation as an act of grace (Gen. 3: 9,10,15). Like the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15: 11-32), God’s unconditional love was revealed through the prophecy on redemption. 5. Being expelled from Eden was both a consequence of rebellion and an act of divine mercy. Banishment prevented humanity from eating from the Tree of Life in a fallen state and living forever in sin, while pointing to God’s greater plan for humanity to live eternally without sin. Gen 3: 15 became the first prophetic message that promised restoration of the human race. 6. God’s communication to us is not limited to a single format. Throughout biblical history, the Creator has revealed His messages using visions, dreams, direct spoken words, natural signs, the still small voice, and the agency of angels to reach different cultures and hearts (Num 12: 6). God’s willingness to use diverse channels demonstrates His humility and commitment to meeting us where we are. 7. Alongside prophetic speech, the Creator speaks through nature (Rom 1:19-20). The order, vastness, and beauty of the physical universe declare God’s power, love and glory to every nation and tongue, leaving humanity without excuse (Ps. 19:1-2). Even scientists are astonished at God’s vast creation. 8. Creation, however, cannot explain the plan of redemption nor can it call people to repent. God provided special revelation through chosen human messengers as His prophetic spokepersons to explicitly call sinners to repent. Scripture gathers and preserves much of this prophetic testimony.. 9. Jesus Christ is the ultimate and definitive revelation of God (Heb. 1:2), the radiance of His glory, and the exact imprint of His nature (John 14:9). He made visible the invisible God through His life, death, and resurrection. With Jesus, all Old Testament revelation is gathered up and surpassed, for He is the Word made flesh, the embodiment of the law, and the perfect image of the invisible God 10. This lesson sets the foundation for the entire quarter by establishing that God is a speaking, relational Creator who bridges the gulf caused by sin through prophetic revelation, ultimately revealed through His incarnate Son. Sin changed the mode of communication but never changed God’s desire to communicate. Next week we will study the topic “The call of a prophet”.
