Harvard also fired the researcher who was originally doing that work because he was finding too many descendents. They wanted him to stop looking, he was unwilling to do so, so they dropped him. I remember seeing an interview the person gave about it.

Aside from the obvious fear of a lawsuit and all that, we can’t forget how creepy enslavement was. People are also tracked like you would track the racehorses you have bred. I think the tracking of these people is even more sinister.

the descendents have a right to the pay that their ancestor never received, and with interest because wealth accumulates across generations. even conservatively assuming that on average each slave worked 3000 hours (roughly 8hrs/day for 5 years) and the value of their labor was something like $10 per hour, they're owed on average $30,000 dollars. that's an almost $50 million payout over 1600 people. that's why they don't want to contact them.
