@modernmilt: If you work in construction, you need to know how to read this. 👀 One inch might not look like much on a tape measure, but there’s a lot happening between those two inch marks. Break that 1 inch in half and you get 1/2”. Break it into four equal sections and you get 1/4” increments. Divide it again and you get 1/8”. And one more time gives you the 1/16” marks you’ll find on most standard tape measures. The trick is remembering that the different-length lines are there for a reason. The longer the line, the larger the fraction halves, quarters, eighths, then sixteenths. Once you understand that pattern, reading a tape measure becomes a whole lot easier. It might be basic knowledge for experienced tradespeople, but for someone just getting into carpentry, construction or DIY, understanding these little lines is one of the first skills worth learning. Be honest how old were you when you learned how to properly read a tape measure?

So much effort is put into avoiding using an easier method of measurement. How many fingers does the average person have? 10. So why not use a base system of 10. And guess what the rest of the planet figured this out eons ago. We even named it the Metric System.
