Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the union said it was concerned about the speed at which the school was constructed, claiming that the project was completed in about four months. The union questioned whether the school is a government project or a facility associated with President Advocate Duma Boko personally. It also called for transparency on how the land on which the school stands was acquired and how the construction was financed. According to the union, the school has a clinic and is expected to be officially opened this Saturday. The Manual Workers Union further claimed that foreigners carried out most of the construction work, while Batswana were allegedly hired mainly for work such as laying slabs and preparations ahead of the official opening. The union also questioned where the money being spent on preparations for the opening ceremony is coming from, saying there should be transparency around the expenditure. It suggested that the project and the planned opening could have political implications, with the union questioning whether the event could amount to campaigning. The union also criticised the decision to name the school after President Boko while he is still serving as head of state. It said the decision was inappropriate, arguing that Botswana has many schools in poor and deteriorating condition that could have benefited from government attention and resources. The union said it was “embarrassed and ashamed” that a sitting President could have a school named after him while still in office. It argued that government should instead prioritise repairing dilapidated schools across the country. The Manual Workers Union also warned President Boko against what it described as an attempt to please his friends at the expense of the broader public interest.
