@codependencykate: Real empathy is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes AS THEM. And you can’t know someone’s experience unless you ask and they tell you. Don’t let your “empathy” undermine collaborative communication and relationship.

Or as Brene Brown says, “empathy is listening to someone else… and believing them”

I really believe having the ability to extend empathy requires a certain level of intelligence; is a form of intelligence. But hearing you speak makes me think there’s some psychological aspect to it. I.e., it’s more about being “whole” by ones-self. Understanding you’re your own separate person, with your own separate strengths, weaknesses, experiences, history, etc. Why is differentiation so hard for people?

Just a question, if you have to be someone else and understand all of their experiences in order to empathize, is it even really possible?

I had an ex that would “empathize” deeply with my trauma and experiences with grief. But it never fully felt like he was REALLY getting it because it always seemed to circle back to him. I would start comforting him for the way MY experience made him feel. It’s so invalidating.

Ooo the child example was so good. Thank u for sharing. I’ll try being more curious about my child’s experiences instead of giving advice based on my experiences.

I don't know what I would do in that situation, but I also don't know what I would want.

That child example was my upbringing. Lol. My parents never experienced anything close to my life and decided everything for me.

GREAT great explanation!!! Because when you put yourself in THEIR shoes, you realize they don’t have the same decision factors or mental thought processes as you do.. so it’s totally different

I get so irritated when ppl talk about their empathy. it's become pathological, just a sanctimonious judgment

Yes people are enmeshed and don’t know it, and therefore do not actually have empathy. (But they think they do)

It’s also a skill, if you’ve grown up constantly projecting, unlearning this takes time, effort, patience and dedication

i think people don’t have theory of mind. i think it’s established before age of 5 or 6? wonder if the childist ideology of denying a child’s agency of their own emotions continues a cycle of people who are unable to understand theory of mind and true empathy

Said so well! Also, as it relates to childism - when I was growing up, most of my concerns were dismissed as irrelevant because how could I, a person who didn’t have to go to work or pay bills, possibly have a legitimate worry in the world? I wasn’t “allowed” to worry about anything until I was an adult, at which point I suddenly had more high-stakes things to worry about and almost no coping skills to deal with it. No wonder I struggled so much as a young adult.

This also requires learning and understanding others on an individual, case by case level. You can't just interpret someone's actions/words/situation based on the average or your own experiences. If you aren't taking the time to understand someone's personal story then you are not practicing empathy and you are highly likely to misinterpret them.
