Google and Waze quickly followed suit, removing real-time traffic updates and crowd-sourcing capabilities from the region. While live traffic data has historically been used in other conflicts by grassroots movements to track troop movements or large gatherings, the shift in Gaza left a massive information gap. Google Earth updated its satellite imagery of Gaza in late 2024 and early 2025, revealing the true scale of the devastation, including vast tent camps for displaced Palestinians sprawling across open spaces, roadsides, and the Mediterranean coastline. Apple Maps continues to display an outdated landscape showing no trace of the destruction.
