Hatched in 1985 at Tokiwa Park as Japan’s first artificially bred rosy pelican, Katta-kun began flying roughly 800 meters to Meiko Kindergarten in 1989. He would enter the school grounds and even walk through the hallways, eventually settling beside the piano while teachers played and children sang. The children gathered around him as if he were simply another member of the school community. Katta-kun’s unusual daily visits became a national story in Japan. His bond with the children earned him an animal-welfare award and even inspired a 1995 anime. His visits continued for years until his death in 2008 at the age of 23. A wild bird chose to make a kindergarten part of his daily routine, creating a friendship that an entire community would never forget.
