the solution to all of these problems is education. we know that punishment and shame are poor motivators for change, so suing shouldn’t be on the forefront of our minds. we are so stuck up on parental rights to have a child that things like mandatory parenting training sound over the top, but is it? focusing on preventative measures for future damage should be the number one priority. (also, we will never escape this epidemic of abusive parenting if we continue to live under a capitalistic system with no social support, no matter what therapeutic bandaids we put on it)

Homeschooling as a way to restrict education should be illegal and the impairment that causes on a person’s ability to get a job, go to college, and function should be grounds to sue parents

I think we need to have more conversations about this, and also psychological/covert abuse, social conditioning. Its obvious that there is a whole category of abuse that is not only being ignored but exploited by "the system." They benefit from having a population of traumatized, enslaved chattel who will obey even when they don't want to. The kind of fracturing that occurs bc of child abuse damages every single aspect of our psychology, biology, personality, behavior. Makes us easy to control. I feel like this is why its "so hard to prove" abuse. The courts, hospitals, etc dont recognize psychological abuse at all, even when its severe theres a lot of victim blaming

I was reading a guy’s musings on being on psychedelics, and he suggested evolved humans are child-like, because they aren’t traumatized into being “adults”

For Therapists to call these things out it requires they have the ability/capacity to recognize & navigate transference, face/grieve their own family dynamics, challenge their own beliefs, and apply dialectical thinking. [simplifying a more complex issue]

They won’t call beating us with a leather belt from the time we were toddlers abuse because then they would have to admit that they did harm. My parents hinge on the fact that they “love” us, and everything they did was because they loved us, and their “intention” trumps any harm they caused.

I don't have answers, just a long standing frustration because it's VERY hard as a minor to escape, so I'm not surprised there's no legal recourse either. they removed the emancipation process in my state mere years before I needed it. I had to break into my mom's apartment, steal her tax forms, bring them to the library to make copies & break back in to return them 😅 just to fill out the friggin FASFA & forge her name. I moved out at 15 & my mother still claimed me on her taxes. there was NOTHING I could do & she withheld anything that might help me just to spite me

the first one is interesting because I've always felt like there is this Gap in accountability. I felt like my mom continued certain traumas with me as vengeance for herself. because she can never hold her parents accountable for what they did to her. which was the reason I chose not to further certain patterns. because I knew the accountability started with me. so the thought of suing for abuse is interesting. for the second question I think it's hard for people to label things as abuse because they struggle with conceptualizing love and abuse in the same relationship which is what causes a lot of cptsd. Relationships that are unsafe but they say they love you. So to a child if they learn in school what emotional abuse is and then they realize their parents are doing it to them it can be really scary. I relied heavy on dissociation and when I became 24 and moved out of my parents house my world was turned upside down with what I realized. You cannot realize that at 10 or at 8 or even 16, because you still need them.

I was parentified as a child. not only did I raise my you ger siblings but in my relationship with my dad i was expected to be the adult emotionally and mentally while having no autonomy. I was forced to always consider his perspective and never mine. I still to this day struggle with admitting that I was emotionally neglected because I see why he did what he did. I see his trauma and his abuse and have justified it away for a long time. but I see too often that adults hold children to higher standards than they do adults and that leads to you ignoring yourself as a child and taking the burden of your parents emotions and actions on yourself. at least in my case that's the way it is.

It seems to me that we all are conditioned to support hierarchies, even if subconsciously. Sometimes it’s not subconscious at all - I have been in family therapy that was explicitly about upholding the family structure, I’ve been in marriage counseling that was about upholding the institution of marriage. It wasn’t until I went through my own deconstruction that I realized that I believe that’s strange and wrong because no system is infallible and we should be able to analyze the systems we participate in. But it seems systems of hierarchy are comforting to a lot of people. On the other side of my deconstruction, I don’t feel the need to uphold hierarchies and my relationships are better for it.

I’m not saying the solution is to sue our parents lol… but I do wonder if adults were held accountable for their abuse, if there would be any less abuse

Crazy that kids can't sue parents, but some states can force adult children to take care of their parents or face legal action

in the family courts if a child doesn't want to go to their mandated parenting time with their abusive parent they can be physically removed by law enforcement and forced to live with their abuser and cut contact with their safe parent. the "reunification" industry is a disgusting industry that's growing

I think parental rights laws are fucked up anything that is beneficial about them can and should be covered by codifying rights for children. Think of what it would look like for a country to make the Declaration of the Rights of the Child binding; it would require completely restructuring society in a way that we can barely even conceptualize at this time (and would quite frankly demand that we abandon capitalism as the primary driver of society). I think not telling children that they are an oppressed class is for various reasons including a desire to maintain control (abusive and so called benevolent), or a fear that giving children this information without also being able to provide protection and mechanisms for change might cause additional harm because children already have so little agency, and are so vulnerable and it could overwhelm them.

sure let him sue. but the only payer for compensation or damages is through social support programs directly from the government. and they have to be exceptionally good. and probably children should be able to access those on their own without print or knowledge or permission.

I’m no lawyer but I’d imagine it’s difficult to do unless there’s like a ton of documented financial abuse. You can sue anyone, but no lawyer is going to help with suing my parents with money I don’t have for money they don’t have when ultimately it would just be me saying they are bad people. Most of the time when I hear of cases it’s either a child star suing for financial abuse, like Michael Oher, or it’s an abuse case that’s so serious that they sue the government instead of their parents. I vaguely remember hearing an adult child win a suit against their mom for posting photos of them on Facebook, but I think now Facebook just lets you request photo removal through the site.
