Do you ever feel like your life is a sliding doors moment? My children and I have spent the past month in Spain with my family, in a place so deeply connected to parts of my childhood and to parts of who I am. I live in NYC with the family I created, while my family of origin is here in Spain. Sometimes I wonder what life would have looked like if I had chosen to be here with them instead of staying in NYC, the place I came to in my late teens. For me, there is something both beautiful and painful about feeling a sense of belonging in more than one place. The beauty is that my heart has been shaped by more than one culture, more than one language, more than one family, more than one home. The painful part is that part of my heart is always somewhere else, and I can never physically be in two places at once. Maybe that’s why I’ve always felt like I belonged somewhere in between. I know I’m not the only one. There are so many people whose hearts have been shaped by more than one place, more than one language, and more than one version of home. But watching my children in Spain, immersed in the smells, food, people, language, traditions, and our family, has brought these two parts of me together in a way I have longed for. Soon we leave, and my heart is very full. We miss Alec and our community in New York, but leaving here will be deeply emotional. I’m so grateful for this time, for the memories we’ve made, and for the love that connects us wherever we are. And celebrating a World Cup win while we were here didn’t hurt either. ❤️🏆🇪🇸 ¡Vamos, España
