They are very patriotic out there in the isles. They don't speak Finnish, everything there is in Swedish, yet 80% of the residents would vote to stay Finnish according to the 2019 study.

stating that Åland "unilaterally" voted to be part of Sweden is not entirely true. Yes the voting that accured was going door to door to ask the people if they wanted to join Sweden or Finland. Many simply asked what their neighbour said or aligned with the man who owned their land. There definetly was a willingness to join Sweden, however it was not a majority as the majority just didn't care and were fine with autonomy.

Swede here! The majority of Ålanders speak Swedish still and it’s a popular day trip for main land Swedes who can take the ferry from the archipelago to Mariehamn. Great video👍🏼

It should be mentioned that if LON didn’t give Finland the Åland islands, Finland would have demanded land from the Tornio river valley, which historically had a lot of finnish speakers and still has a lot of places that have finnish names.

he didnt go into detail on this in the video but when aland wished to rejoin sweden, the league of nations went to look and while it is closer to sweden, you never actually leave finnish teritorial waters while going there from the finnish side, you can always see the next island when as with the swedish side, its open sea for almost all of the journey
