FYI to commenters.. you have to be a patrol officer before you can branch out to other tasks. I.E. swat officers were patrol officers first.. every officer goes through an academy. Every officer starts on patrol. Cudos to SROs

In 2001 the officer assigned to my middle and high school area was patrolling. He had just driven by when the call came out. I spent a day locked in a classroom with scared kids and a coward of a teacher hiding behind us. We didn’t know what was going on, but every so often kids would run through screaming for help… the SRO had gotten to the scene in time and talked the kid into releasing his classmates and eventually surrendering without a shot.
