@overgenpoverty: did we actually reach Coast FI at 30? 💸 kinda (this example makes lots of assumptions including that we’re just trying to retire “on time” ~ which is huge for us as first gens) so what does that actually mean? Basically, Coast FI means we’ve already invested enough that, theoretically, we could never contribute another dollar toward retirement, let what we already have invested compound, and still have enough to retire later 🔥 Right now, we have about $460,000 invested — mostly in low-cost S&P 500 and total market index funds ✨ For our calculations, we assume a 10% average annual return and ~3% inflation, giving us a simplified 7% “real” return. In other words, we’re estimating how much our money could grow after accounting for the fact that everything will cost more in the future. Actual returns and inflation will vary, of course!! At that 7% real return, $460K at 30 could grow to roughly $4.9 MILLION by 65 — even if we never invested another dollar lol I know 🤯 And the craziest part? We started small. We both started our careers as teachers. As our incomes increased, we tried not to increase our lifestyle at the same rate. Instead, we put more toward paying off debt, saving and investing ~ while still spending on the things we LOVE, like traveling, our family and giving back. And we’re definitely not done investing.
