@graceforpersonalityhires: Replying to @song.younghoon most people are paid enough! Bunch of different conversations here but starting with a blanket “people are underpaid” is very internet. Doesn’t mean someone doesn’t have potential to make more! Everyone does. Also doesn’t mean someone’s desired salary is equal to the value they are creating in their market.
What is your evidence that most people are being paid enough? And how are you defining enough?

lol…ok, as I sit here in my Alphabet Workers Union shirt: no. Absolutely not. This is just thinly veiled conservative propaganda. It truly is. “The market” is not a perfectly magical, efficient thing, and even if it were, we as a society make choices about what things we prioritize and value and who the systems we build favor. American systems heavily favor the rich and large companies in a way that European systems don’t. That’s not a law of nature. We undertax the wealthy, and we undertax investment income, and cut services that would help people to pay for that choice. And it’s not even “rational”: Executive compensation spiked radically in the 80s, and the best explanation economists can come up with for why is definitely not that executives became either rare or wildly more productive; it was just that they could and they weren’t being paid like sports superstars. That’s it. So for anyone reading this: refuse to be told “the market” is paying you what you are worth. Join a union. Make a union. Refuse to accept that your family has to struggle to make ends meet so a billionaire can have a prettier yacht. Don’t buy the BS. Remember the wealthy and powerful are never just going to say “I just feel entitled to get as rich as anyone will let me.” So there will always be some nonsense rationalization for why money should go to them competing with Elon Musk for who has the net worth high score instead of your kids getting healthcare.

how much is “enough” is directly determined by the structural costs of living. therefore, if you cannot afford the cost of living, you are likely not getting paid enough. if the cost of everything has gone up, wages must go up accordingly.

This is sooooo inaccurate. 40 years ago, an entry-level job for a college graduate paid about $65,000 (adjusted for inflation of course) vs. $56k today, and graduates didn't come out with crushing school loan debt. Corporate profits, shareholder profits, c-suite salaries and inflation have all faaaaaar out-paced worker salaries. In general, employees are NOT paid enough.

Around 40% of working people can’t afford their expenses.

This! In my particular world, there's a general feeling that we're not paid what we're worth... and heck, being in a caring profession, I agree! But what I don't think people understand is that "worth" is ultimately a construct determined by economics and society... but hearing super inexperienced people say they should be making 3x what they are... I don't

I have watched multiple people get hired as entry-level employees and within a year they legitimately have an axe to grind about how there's a "pay equity" problem. Is there? Or are you confusing the objective value of your 1-2 years of experience and tendency to show up late with the value of a mid-career professional who knows the work, has the relationships, and acts like a professional? Oh! Okay, I didn't realize your manager was jealous and sabotaging you. That changes everything.

“Enough” is a very shotty premise. Enough is a variable being paid fairly, being paid as much as a colleague who does the same job brings mostly the same value. In this economy, the “levers” sit higher and higher in case you haven’t seen, money is being heavily concentrated at the top where 6 years ago there was more distributed wealth. So, sure make your case. Don’t settle but the world has changed drastically. Your argument is slightly dated.

You’re talking about lifestyle creep, what about the steep increase in cost of living, food, gas, etc.

not really. the corporate environment is heavily consolidated at this point and without rigorous antitrust enforcement corporations are able to depress wages beyond what a healthy market economy would pay
