It’s more nuanced than that. It’s a combination of less parent involvement, larger class sizes, different economic conditions, AND technology.

It’s a parenting (not parenting) crisis.

When I get asked about whether a student needs an IEP, I ask how much they read books in the house or play away from screens. You would be surprised how many don't see the connection.

I had a student last year with dyslexia and ADHD whose parents were giving her a low tech childhood. Guess who was reading at grade level (even though it was difficult)?

I do think that it’s maybe as much about parents on their phones as it is about kids on theirs. I’ve seen so many parents talking to their kids with a screen in their face. I don’t think anyone’s paying attention to their kids anymore.

There’s an article in the Atlantic called The End of Reading is Here - worth reading (though a bit lengthy)

you're not wrong. I have a couple of 6th grade students who struggle to write their own names and it's not uncommon for them to not show up to school until 11:30, we start at 8:00 a.m.

I know cell phones are a problem. But could it be the culmination of the multi decades attack on public education, teachers and their union. The rise of charter schools, standardized testing, voucher programs, legislation to systematically underfund public education…maybe, just maybe it is starting to show itself in outcomes….

I used to read more and now I absorb data through screens and audio. This is a skill that I’m no longer practicing regularly and I’m getting worse at accessing typed data on a page
