@beautifuldestinations: Just a reminder of what New Zealand is about to look like… Lupin season starts across parts of the South Island from late November, with the Mackenzie Basin, Lake Tekapo and surrounding roads turning pink, purple and white. If you’re planning a trip around the blooms, base yourself in Lake Tekapo for easy access to the lake and some of the most photographed lupin views. Twizel is another great option if you want to explore more of the Mackenzie Basin and have a quieter base. Give yourself a few days rather than making lupins the only stop on your itinerary. The drive between Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Twizel is part of the experience, with turquoise lakes, mountain scenery and plenty of places to stop along the way. It’s also worth checking local conditions closer to your trip, as lupin flowering can vary from year to year. Late November through December is generally the main window to aim for.
