@coachzachclark: I spent a large portion in my career working for Coach Sam Harrell. Three state titles, Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, 239 wins. And in all that time I never once saw him get down on a kid. Two things came out of his mouth more than anything else. “Just keep getting better.” “Give them confidence.” That was it. Bad rep, give them confidence. Blown assignment on third down, give them confidence. Down 21 at half, just keep getting better. He wasn’t ignoring the mistake. He was coaching the kid through it instead of burying him under it. I took that with me and it’s the thing I hold myself to now. Our players are watching our face before they ever look at the scoreboard, and they look at us fastest right after something goes wrong. Whatever they see on their coach in that half second becomes their standard for how to respond. If I panic, they panic. If I’m steady, they’re steady. I’m teaching them how to handle adversity every single Friday whether I mean to or not. So I keep my head up. I coach the next rep. I give them confidence in every chance I can. Speak life.
