@leave_then_cleave: Sometimes the spouse everyone blames for “changing you” didn’t actually change you. They just helped you see what you had been taught to normalize. In unhealthy family systems, a new spouse can become a threat because they ask different questions, challenge old patterns, and refuse to participate in dynamics everyone else has learned to tolerate. And suddenly the story becomes: “They’re controlling you.” “They turned you against us.” “You’re not the same anymore.” Maybe you’re not. Maybe you’re healthier. Marriage is supposed to create a new primary family unit. And sometimes choosing to protect that marriage is exactly how generational patterns finally begin to change. If your spouse became the scapegoat the moment you started setting boundaries, you’re definitely not alone. #FamilyEstrangement #ToxicFamily #Marriage #Boundaries #FamilyDynamics
in my opinion, this is the true core of many Mother-in-law vs. Daughter-in-law rivalries. Mom can't stand to see her child growing away from the system, while Wife cant stand seeing their partner leaning into the dysfunction.

My husband tells me that he feels like I pulled him out of the matrix because he never realized how dysfunctional things were before I started pointing it out.

And this is Why so many people have a problem with Prince Harry and Megan. Because when Harry Married Megan, he no longer felt the need to put up with the dysfunction.

Yup! My husband was always expected to be around his family even if some of them were very mean to him/each other. When we married and got our place, I became the one who “alienated him away from his family” and that’s been the narrative ever since. I’m so glad my husband decided to stand up for himself and us.

Oooff this was me. I kind of brought down the whole family (unintentionally). Except I am NOT from a ‘healthy family system’. It was just that mine wasn’t *quite* as dysfunctional as his. But yeah… those early years were tough because his mum really, really hated my guts. She still does but thank god he saw the light and is now NC.

My mom loves to tell me “when your daughter marries and has children then you’ll understand how I feel” I understand NOW,but I don’t have to accept it and pass it down.

my husband was essentially his mother's husband and his brother's dad. they were both jealous of me and didn't want him to prioritize his life with me. super fun.

We have the added fun bonus that we’re lesbians, and my family had tried to send me to conversion therapy to ‘fix me’ when I was 19. She is my rock.

I'm the scapegoat. when my mom (I'm very low contact) met my boyfriend she started making her small jabs but while smiling and laughing. I was always the butt of the joke.
"she's such a complainer, isn't she?! ahahaha" (I'm the only child that holds boundaries and I don't let her run me over)
my bf shocked me and didn't respond to her at first. he then said,
"I don't think shes a complainer or anything of the sort. she's amazing and brings so much joy to my life, I can't relate to what you see at all"
it was such a good response, because it wasn't rude. she just didn't respond and walked away. imma marry this man.
