Today while volunteering at the shelter, I walked past a kennel and saw a beautiful dog lying quietly on her bed, looking at me with the sweetest eyes. Her name is Ruby. She was surrendered by her family on May 23rd because they no longer had time for her. Ruby is a Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix. She is housebroken, good with children, and good with other dogs. When I took her out, I thought I was going to help heal a little bit of her broken heart. Instead, she broke mine. From the moment she left her kennel, all she wanted was to be close to me. In the bonding room, she leaned into me, hid her face under my arm, and just wanted to be held. Then we went for a walk. Ruby looked around with such hope in her eyes that it was hard to watch. She seemed to be searching for someone, and all I could think about was the fact that she has no idea her family is never coming back. She doesn't know a decision was made. She only knows they're gone. When it was time to take her back to her kennel, I sat with her for as long as I could. She rested her head on my lap, buried her face in my arms, and seemed to beg me not to leave her there too. I shared her story, never imagining that more than ONE MILLION people would watch her video and root for her happy ending. Later that same day, a wonderful woman named Kimberlee reached out to me. She told me she was getting in her car in the middle of the night and driving for 5 hours so she could be at the shelter the moment the doors opened the next morning. What makes this even more incredible is that Kimberlee didn't even follow my page. Ruby's video simply appeared on her feed, and something about Ruby touched her heart so deeply that she knew she couldn't leave her behind. Kimberlee served our country in the Air Force for more than 30 years, and after losing her husband eight years ago, she understood what it felt like to need companionship and unconditional love. The next morning, she was standing outside the shelter before they even opened, ready to bring Ruby home. Less than 24 hours after her story was shared, Ruby's life changed forever.❤❤❤ Today, her name is Ruby Anne and she follows her mom everywhere she goes, sleeps in bed beside her, adores her two new sisters, and has taken her job of supervising the local squirrels very seriously. I don't think it was a coincidence that Kimberlee showed up wearing a hat that said,
