@joebovino: Transfer Yourself to a U.S. Company with an L-1 Visa If you already own a company outside the United States with a bunch of employees, and you want to open or expand here, the L-1 visa may be your best bet. The L1 visa is for transferring an executive, a manager, or a specialized-knowledge employee from a foreign company to a U.S. company. And in order for it to work, the U.S. company must be a parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate of the foreign one. A brand-new office can work too, but you'll need premises, funds, and a staffing plan. You generally need one year of work abroad, in the last three years, for the foreign company in order to transfer to the U.S. company on an L1 visa. The L1 visa also allows something called "dual intent." That means you can be here with nonimmigrant intent on a temporary L-1 visa but also intend to become a permanent resident in the future by petitioning for an immigrant visa (or green card).
