One night in northern Michigan I was staying at my grandparents place, who had 40+ acres of woods among even more woods around it. Nearest neighbor back that way was a couple miles in. One winter late night my dumb beagle got out and went after something in the woods. I could hear him baying and his collar jingling just beyond the tree line. I kept calling and calling and whistling (a traditional no-no in my culture already, but I didn’t believe in it). I called and whistled and he wouldn’t come back. Then I heard someone in the woods whistling back at me. All the noise of my beagle hunting stopped. I said “welp RIP dog I’m out” lol and went inside and locked the door. Luckily my dog was perfectly fine. Came back in the early morning and was grounded for a good while. Never saw what was out in the woods but you won’t catch me out there at night to this day haha
