@kantrowitz: The five-company future isn't inevitable—but the pressure toward it is real. Matthew Prince recently heard a blunt assessment from a former PayPal CEO: consolidation in commerce might compress everything down to five companies controlling money, real estate, manufacturing, logistics, and AI. It's a thought experiment, not a prediction. But it captures something Prince is actively worried about: as AI agents start making purchasing decisions for people, will new brands without established market presence actually survive? The stakes are binary. Either agentic commerce becomes a level playing field where unknown brands can thrive through agent discovery and recommendation, or it becomes the ultimate moat for incumbents. One path creates optionality. The other creates oligarchy. Prince is framing this not as inevitable decline but as a design problem—which means it's still solvable. 1 company would be communism. When they break up communism there will be 5 companies owned by the people in the prior communist administration. Rinse and repeat.
